Who I Am (briefly) and a Little History...
I am Amy Lynn Miller Bailey, a working mother of two school age children - Chase, a middle-schooler and Claire who attends elementary school. I was born and raised in Virginia and I met my husband Brian while studying at The University of Virginia. We have been married for fifteen years and we live with our kids and miniature dachsund, Kelsey, in Fairfax, VA.
After graduating from The University of Virginia in 1991 with a B.A. in Spanish, I moved briefly to Atlanta, GA and worked for a telecommunications firm. Less than a year later I returned to the Washington D.C. area first working for a small publishing firm for a couple of years then spending the next seven years working for two large software corporations. I "retired" from coprorate life when Claire was born and worked part time doing some consulting and teaching until become General Manager of Values Count, LLC.
Why I Care About Values
Well, for one I'm a mom. I feel that the most important job I have is to ensure my children make it to adulthood in one piece practicing the values that will allow them to be productive contributors to our society. I want them to be assets to and in this world; good examples for others to follow, not bad role models.
Secondly, I just think values are important and I sort of feel like they are taking a back seat in the lives of many. We do what's easy, we react without thinking, or we have a me-centered approach and we don't really consider the consequences of our actions. I by no means want to tell people what to do or what values they should consider important but I do think there is a gap between what people believe their values are and how they want to practice them and the way that they actually are practicing them. Myself included. It's a continuous process to reinforce the practice of positive values. It does take making a concerted effort sometimes but it's not hard to do and we all can do better. I think we can live better lives, have better relationships if we focus just a little more on practicing positive values and resisting the sometimes overwhelming urges we have to react without thinking in challenging situations. It's not always easy to take the high road but it usually makes one feel a lot better, a lot more satisfied.
